Beyond the Keyhole: What 101 "Star Buddies" Taught Us About Creativity

At Point of AC, we spend our days obsessing over pixels, frames, and the “perfect” colour palette to appeal to the widest audience. Yet when we partnered with LoveXpress to bring the "Love Art" Greater Bay Area Collaborative Exhibition to life, we realised our true task wasn’t just design – it was translation.

For many individuals with Special Educational Needs (SEN), the world can feel like a conversation they aren’t invited to. There is a profound loneliness in being “underseen”—not because you are invisible, but because your internal language hasn’t been translated for the world to understand.
LoveXpress’s call was simple and revolutionary: invite SEN students to draw and share their "Star Buddies” on paper. Our task? To translate these unique visions and use our craft to build a bridge between worlds. We had two months. The timeline was a whirlwind; and our expectations, we’d soon learn, were far too small.
From Screens to the Soul
We took on the role of lead translators, meticulously crafting a floorplan that leads visitors through an unfolding narrative. From the tall arches lining the entrance, to the sensory room and communal table cloths, every inch was designed to turn passive “viewing” into active “participating”. But we were so caught up in the technical execution that we almost missed the bigger picture until we saw it in person – our floorplan had created something much larger.

From day one, the energy was palpable. It felt like watching a children’s storybook come to life. Visitors added their own creative touches to a giant "loving stone" and filled blank tablecloths with colours. We listened to the shared experiences of these children and their families on stage. We spent time in the sensory room, immersing ourselves in the common experiences of SEN youth. The most touching moment came when we held hands with one another to activate the spinning light at that dark space’s exit. In that spark of light, we saw the barrier between "us" and "them" simply dissolve.
The Stars We Were Given
Seeing the SEN children and youth move through the exhibition, admiring their own and their peers’ creativity struck a light in us. Our job at Point of AC has always been to help others actualise their dreams and translate visions into words. Yet here was a vibrant community that had been silenced not by a lack of things to say, but by a lack of a platform.
Were we able to help them through this initiative?
Yes, we believe we did. But more importantly, they helped us.
LoveXpress didn’t just put on an art show; they gave these children the stars. And for a brief, beautiful moment in the heart of Wan Chai, we all got to see how bright they shine. It reminded us that our work isn't just about making things look "correct"— it’s about ensuring that even the most “untranslated” visions find their voice.
We walked away realising that our true purpose at Point of AC is to ensure that even the most "untranslated" visions find their voice. We want to help every client find their "stars," because when the underseen finally shine, the whole world gets a little brighter.
